One of the forum mods sent me a PM that I had broken a forum rule against spamming.

First, there is no forum rule against spam, but even if there were, I don't think my post was spam anyway. But regardless, the forum is setup so that unless you have a minimum number of posts, you can't respond to a PM.

What is the purpose of restricting PM responses until a new user reaches a minimum number of posts?

Are you Fred Goodwin? Weren't you a member in here before?

The PM was the new way for hackers and spammers to get to the members. The Staff was not able to detect the spamming until it was reported by a member. That's why there's a limit on PMs.

You can still PM Administrators. At the moment there's no way to respond to anyone else when you're under the PM limit. This is because the Administrators usually know about the inner workings of the forum and any fake virus PM's would be easily dealt with.
